The Ethics of Sacred Feng Shui
As you may get involved in helping other people with the feng shui of their homes, and as the relationship between you is important, it is highly desirable to create your own set of ethics, so that you can define that relationship and (if necessary) set boundaries. Clarity on this issue can prevent a lot of difficulties later on and get you off to a positive start. This subject is personal to each person who uses feng shui, but here are some suggestions to consider.
- Confidentiality
In order for you to reach the source of any problem, the person you are working with will need to be confident that you are someone they can open up to, and that anything they tell you will remain confidential.
- Discretion
There is no need to make exaggerated claims for feng shui, or to try and persuade someone else to use it. You will be in a stronger position if you let other people come to you and let your results do the talking. Each situation is unique, and it is very difficult to know to what extent feng shui will have an impact on another person's life.
- Focus on Issues
Remember that feng shui is all about the person, rather than building. So even if you find things that could be considered negative about someone's home, but they are not experiencing any problems associated with it, there is no need to worry him or her unnecessarily. Focus on the issues with which the other person has asked for help.
- Respect Each Person's Life Journey
Everyone has their own journey through life and deserves respect to follow that path as he or she sees fit. Feng shui (and your own role in it) is simply there to help that person with his or her life's adventure. Try not to make judgements or impose your own perception of life on someone else.
- Be Clear About Fees
If there is to be any exchange of money, you need to make it clear what the value of your offering is and what is included in your fee. Write this down, for greater clarity. Make sure there is agreement about what you will provide in terms of ongoing advice.
- Set Your Own Limits
There have been cases where feng shui has allegedly been used against another person or business. You will therefore need to decide whether this is something you want to get involved in. if not, make that quite clear to the other party.
- Be Professional
It can help to set yourself standards of professionalism, in terms of punctuality, keeping accurate records, your appearance, business ethics and the time taken to respond to telephone messages and e-mails.
