Feng Shui Materials

The surfaces you use in your home also define how the chi flows there. Careful selection of materials means that you can fine-tune the atmosphere of your house or apartment.

Big surface areas, such as flooring, will have the greatest influence, and it is worth taking great care over the materials you use.

Natural materials tend to carry chi more easily than synthetic materials, and help it circulate well throughout your home. An example of this is wood, where the chi continues to flow along the grain.

Many synthetic materials block the passage of chi, risking the creation of stagnant spaces within your home. In addition, some synthetic materials, such as nylon carpets, build up a charge of static electricity that interferes with your superficial chi.
  • Ying And Yang Materials

Rough textured surfaces (such as a wool carpet) slow chi down, making it more yin, whereas hard, shiny, flat surfaces (such as glazed tiles) speed up the flow of chi, creating a more yang atmosphere.

  • Wood Materials

    Wicker
    Bamboo
    Seagrass

  • Fire Materials

    Glazed Tile
    Fired Stone

  • Soil Materials

  • Metal Materials

  • The Five Elements

You can also think of materials in terms of the five elements. Each type of material encourages a certain flow of chi. By applying the transparency of the eight directions, you can establish which materials naturally suit each part of your home. Using those materials will lead to a more harmonious exchange of chi and will develop distinct atmospheres in each part of your home.
