Effective Use of Shapes in a Feng Shui Home

The shapes or forms in a room further define how the chi behaves there. Long, straight lines allow the chi to flow faster, while sharp edges encourage swirling chi, and corners slow down stagnant chi.

The shapes of the furniture alter the chi flow to a lesser extent. For example, rounded or curved objects allow chi to move more harmoniously and make it easier for you to feel relaxed.
  • Yin and Yang Shapes

Yang shapes are those that encourage chi to move faster and are therefore made up of straight lines and hard edges.

A rectangular room with rectangular furniture stimulates clarity of thought and should help you feel more decisive. Yin forms are curved, rounded and irregular, so an irregular-shaped room with a variety of rounded and curved furniture encourages chi to meander more slowly, making it easier to feel settled there. This type of room is generally better when you need to use your creativity and imagination. Strong linear lines and shapes create a yang atmosphere where the feel is clean, orderly and functional.

  • The Five Elements

You can help to move chi in different directions using the shapes associated with the five elements.

  • Wood

Vertical lines, tall shapes and high ceilings encourage chi to move upwards, helping you to feel like taking on more and lifting the limits on what you can achieve.

  • Fire

Star shapes, zigzag lines and pyramid forms produce more fire chi. For instance, a pointed ceiling is mentally stimulating and makes it easier to express yourself.

  • Soil

Horizontal lines, squat flat forms and low ceilings create more soil chi. This makes it easier to connect with other people and focus on what is going on around you.

  • Metal

Arches, circles and domes bring more metal chi into a space. You will find that you can contain your chi better and can focus on completing things in your life.

  • Water

Wavy lines, irregular forms and abstract shapes generate water chi. Use these to help you feel more flexible and to dig deep for that original thought.
